Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games Review (Wii)

Life is not always about having fun in the sun and Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games stands as a perfect example to this statement. The expedition of these cute and cuddly characters at the regular Olympic Games proved to be an entertaining one, but will the snow hamper the fun? Let’s find out.

Based on the Olympic Winter Games to follow in 2010, Mario and Sonic have a large selection of different events to partake in. There are a total of 8 different events as well as variations of these events. For example : speed skating will have a 500m, 1000m and  a relay race. The other events include Alpine Skiing, Snowboarding, Bobsleighing, figure skating and a few others. There’s more than enough variation to keep any player happy.

Players can also take part in the “festival” mode which allows you to play through your own career at the Winter Olympics from the opening to the closing ceremony. Over those 17 days you will have to practice and partake in events in order to become the Winter Olympic champion. This is a fun filled campaign and a great way to learn the controls, seeing as you’re given a visual tutorial as opposed to reading a boring written one. There is also a ‘party games’ selection which allows for you and 3 others to play through several events, as well as other mini games. This adds a great dimension to the game as it translates into a ton of fun when four players are standing in front of the TV screaming at one another.

Cute factor and game modes aside, the controls are what turn this good game into a great one.  In each and every game mode, players will be required to swing, tilt, shake, turn and spin their Wii-mote at the screen in order to try and win events. There will never be a dull moment when your hand will remain idle or mashing buttons. The controls work really well and create a great interactive gaming experience. Trust us, your arm will be dead after a few events.

Many have doubted the Wii’s ability to deliver in the graphics department, however Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games is no ugly duckling. The visuals are solid and impressive for a Wii title. The environments are executed in typical Mario and Sonic style and are fairly well detailed.

On the whole Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games is a great new title under the Wii’s belt. It has a vast number of events to play through, fun-filled controls and some great visuals. Whether you’re playing it alone or with your friends, you’re sure to have a blast and suffer from cramps in your arm.
