Since its inception in 2002, the Ratchet and Clank series has become an all-time favourite amongst fans. Now the hairy hero and his tin sidekick have made their return to the PS3 and promise to deliver a whole new bunch of laughs and craziness.
Without giving too much away A Crack In Time kicks off shortly after the events of the previous installment. This time round good old Clank has been captured by the evil Dr. Nefarious as part of his evil plan to rule the galaxy. Hell bent on saving his buddy *sniff* Ratchet sets off on a galaxy spanning adventure to find Clank. Make no mistake, the story is very intricate, unique and highly entertaining. Expect to find some top notch voice acting that will make the manliest of men giggle.
In true Ratchet and Clank style, this 3rd person platforming adventure delivers all the gameplay thrills we’ve come to expect and then some. In your attempt to reunite with your counterpart you will visit different galaxies and unlock new ones as you progress throughout the game. You will have to use your trusty ship to explore each solar system and fly from galaxy to galaxy. This is a welcomed feature as it adds some nice variation to an already great gameplay.
One would think that after all these years the developers would have run out of ideas for weapons but this is far from the truth. With a whole new crazy arsenal, Ratchet is meaner than ever and you’ll find yourself in some mental fight scenes with shots being fired left, right and center. With the ability to purchase new weapons of mass destruction and upgrade you’re current ones, players are in for some exciting and immersive gameplay. The game runs incredibly smooth and there are a number of side missions and tons of collectibles to keep you going.
When it comes to visuals A Crack in Time makes the duo, their friends and enemies look better than ever. While some may argue that the visuals appear a bit simplistic when compared to your more ‘hardcore’ titles, the visuals form part of the R&C style and they have been executed really well. Level design is phenomenal and expect to have some moments that will leave you wondering as to what the drug of choice was for the developers. In short: they’re weirdly amazing, pleasing to the eye and great to play in. There are also a number of CG cut scenes which will blow you away.
Overall, Ratchet and Clank: A Crack in Time is a great title. It has a great story and funny voice acting. Its gameplay is as solid as the metal on Clank’s back and will guarantee you hours of fun. To top it off, it’s a really good looking title that runs like a dream. Our two favourite heroes have come a long way since 2002 and even after all this time they still manage to deliver a great adventure that will leave you feeling warm and fuzzy inside.
