DJ Hero Review (360/PS3/Wii)

Heroes come in many shapes and sizes. Guitar Hero may have been the only musical saviour among these parts, but Activision have introduced a new hero to the series. DJ Hero steps in to appeal to some of the peeps who weren’t too much into the rock scene. But will it win the hearts of the crowd, or be scratched off the list?

DJ hero borrows from the original Guitar Hero formula and then takes a different direction in terms of controls. As per usual, there will be a highway whereby different colour notes will appear on the screen and the player will have to hit the notes in time in order to create the marvel that is music.

Seeing as the DJ theme is the fuel behind the concept, players will have to make use of the peripheral which is compromised of a turntable for scratching and three buttons for creating beats. It also boasts a crossfader, equalizer knob and a euphoria button (The DJ Hero version of star power). All of the above can seem a bit overwhelming at first but after some practice it becomes one of the most entertaining peripheral-orientated experiences, and you’ll find yourself bopping your head as you become the world’s best DJ.

Depending on the chosen difficulty, players will have to hit the right button combinations, scratch the right notes and use the cross fader to navigate in and out of the music highway lanes. The goal is the same as before; hit all the right notes in order to score high points. Players will achieve ratings based on their overall performance of a mix. Using the stars that are earned players will be able to unlock new mixes, venues, DJ’s, outfits and turntables.

In terms of the music mix list, DJ Hero has tons of songs to choose from. It has a wide variety of genres ranging from rap for the gangsters, house for the clubbers, rock for the rockers and pop for those who enjoy the commercial stuff. Expect to see some Jay Z, Queen, Daft Punk and Rihanna tunes.

Got a guitar lying around? No problem, as DJ Hero also has mixes that will allow for one player to DJ while the other melts some faces with the guitar. You can also connect another DJ peripheral and play co-operatively or competitively against a buddy. Players can also jump online and battle with online friends.

Activison have also promised to support DJ Hero will loads of DLC in the future, so if it all goes well you should be scratching away at all the latest tunes for a long time to come.

With a super cool peripheral, a great soundtrack and the ability to make use of your guitar, DJ Hero is a great title which will be enjoyed by the young and old. It is sure to become and fan-favourite and we look forward to sequels in the future. DJ Hero is certainly a hero  in our hearts.
