Quantum Theory Hands-on Preview

There have been a lot of ‘Gears of War clones’ around lately, but none more-so than Quantum Theory; Team Tachyon’s new Sci-fi third-person shooter. But hey, if you going to copy, you might as well do it from the best right?

Quantum Theory lets players take on the role of Syd, the game’s beefy protagonist. Not much has been revealed about the story at this point, but from what we’ve played the premise revolves around a black material called Erosion which has mutated people and the landscape, creating a “living tower” acting as the centre of the mutation. It’s up to Syd and a mysterious female partner known as Fillena to enter the tower and fight their way to the source in order to save humanity.

Quantum Theory plays like your standard third-person shooter, but there are twists to this formula. The tower is essentially a living, breathing organism which is constantly changing and shifting. This causes the environments to alter from time to time, giving players different perspectives and opportunities for cover, or taking them away. This makes the gameplay feel fresh, despite the idea being touched on by other games, such as Fracture. Another interesting mechanic is the ability to use Fillena as a weapon, as Syd can pick her up, and throw her towards larger enemies, allowing Fillena to slice through them with a giant blade she wields.

From the demo, the game also looks pretty unique, although it does carry that ‘Unreal Engine’ type of look. The enemies are grotesque and largely interesting, and the guns and level design are unlike many games out there at the moment. So far, we’re happy with Quantum Theory, but hopefully thisgame has got a few more hooks up its sleeve to reel in gamers this year.
