We take a spin with the upcoming DJ Hero...

Guitar Hero has become a global phenomenon and has gained millions of fans thanks to easy-to-learn, hard-to-master mechanics. DJ Hero has taken a similar concept and adapted it to suit fans of other music genres. We managed to take a scratch at the new DJ Hero game and peripheral.

Instead of the good old fashioned guitar DJ Hero places you as the DJ with a turntable. The turntable has three buttons on it, a scratch pad and a cross-fader switch which will have to be used in conjunction with each other to achieve the perfect score.

Being highly responsive, DJ Hero requires the player to complete certain beat sequences using the buttons, scratch particular segments with the turn table, and mix between songs with the cross fader. The turntable peripheral works really well and is a little more engaging than your guitar thanks to the fact that you can scratch.

So far the game has some really cool and bouncy tracks for you to mix and it can be quite addictive to play.

With its release in November 2009, this DJ is bound to mix up some sick beats and a huge following to bounce along with it.

Grab your Wii-motes, grasp your nunchucks, time to feel the need for speed!

With Need for Speed: Shift recently hitting stores and rejuvenating the series for EA, as well as long-time fans, the NFS series is heading to the Wii in the form of Nitro, an exclusive for the system which is sure to make an impact right off the starting blocks.

Conversely to Shift, Nitro takes on a slightly more animated and over-the-top arcade racing direction. The tracks and vehicles, although licensed, are stylized with larger wheels and sleeker designs to fully utilize the Wii’s capabilities. The tracks are vibrant and exciting, while the vehicles themselves, which range from the Audi R8 to the Lamborghini Gallardo, look fantastic.

A real sense of speed has also been captured within Nitro, and thanks to the intuitive motion controls of the Wii, drifting around corners with the nun-chuck and boosting with nitro by shaking the Wii-mote are great elements which have been incorporated to make this new direction for the Need for Speed franchise fun and exciting.

So far Need for Speed: Nitro felt awesome. The cars were crazy, the tracks were crazy, the idea is crazy, and we’re crazy about Nitro.

Time to hit the slopes with the Italian plumber and blue hedgehog! Cowabunga..in the snow!!

Mario and Sonic have already had their go at the Olympics with their first collaborative title, Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Games, which appeared on the Wii last year. Now it’s time for that moustached Italian plumber and blue hedgehog to hit the slopes in spirit of the 2010 Winter Olympic Games taking place in Vancouver, Canada. We recently got our hands on this fun sports title which is due for release within the next month.

Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games is essentially broken up into a number of events representing the real world Winter Olympics. We got our hands on downhill snowboarding and ice-hockey, and we’re glad to say, we’re very happy with what we experienced.

The downhill snowboarding was incredibly fun. Controlling the character by holding the Wii-mote upright, and using tilts to the left or right to steer, with a lift of the controller to jump and do tricks. Each character has their own special ability, which range from speed up boosts to attacks, to help them in the downhill race.

On to the ice-hockey, in which the controls felt responsive and the entire event was extremely easy to pick up and play. Controlling your four man/hedgehog/plumber/(insert species here) team was incredibly easy with the nunchuck, while the Wii-mote was used for shots and checks.

The fact that all these events are multiplayer only adds to mix and we can see ourselves losing days and nights battling it out on the Vancouver Mountains with SEGA and Nintendo’s heroes and villains. Check back for the full review soon.

We get some one-on-one with James Cameron's Avatar: The Video Game.

Little is actually known about James Cameron’s Avatar, the movie and video game for that matter. Avatar, set in the future, revolves around a group of humans who inhabit a planet known as Pandora in order to mine a valuable fuel source. On Pandora, the humans engage with the native Na’vi, who don’t take a liking to the humans’ intrusion on their planet.

Set in the same Avatar universe as the film, the video game takes place within a different timeline, as players take control of the human faction, where you’ll play as a marine, or the Na-Vi, where you’ll become the character of an Avatar and experience their side of the story, as well as their unique gameplay mechanics.

Playing as the human faction feels powerful to say the least. Armed with flaring assault-rifles and a host of special abilities, such as cloaking devices and self-healing, the human faction is a familiar yet unique third-person shooter experience. Cool weapons, futuristic helicopter. While playing is the Na-Vi is primarily focused on more melee based attacks, incorporating elements of a brawler into the mix, while the Na’Vi have some incredible powers of their own.

Avatar: The Video Game incorporates a complete day and night cycle into the world of Pandora. Not only does the light differ from day and night, but the entire surroundings including the plants, shift and change during the transitions.

Avatar: The Video Game is running off an enhanced Dunia engine (of Far Cry 2 fame), so expect to see some organic fire effects and a dynamic world at your hands this November when Avatar: The Video Game drops.

Grab your boots, stretch those fingers, it's that time of year again.

That time of year is finally here, where EA Sports roll out their annual fan-favourite soccer sim. This year FIFA 10 is set to push the benchmark even further than past iterations, and the GCL team was fortunate enough to attend the official launch party this past Friday at the Rage expo.

With an awesome presentation and accommodating features, the FIFA 10 launch was decked out for some footie-fun and excited fingers. What we learned was, FIFA 10 is all about celebration, that of figurative and literal actions. In the spirit of celebrations, the likes of Gary Bailey and Dr. Khumalo forged two opposing teams pitted in a miniature penalty shoot-out, where each team would attempt to produce their best celebrations to win over the crowd. Bailey’s team won it hands down (with the help of GCL input) and it was off to the main event.

After a brief, yet informative introduction, eager attendees were able to get some hands-on time with one of the year’s most anticipated titles.

FIFA 10 feels fresh. It’s undoubtedly still the same ol’ FIFA we’ve all grown to love, but there’s something new about it. A ton of polish and some new beautifully fluid animations immediately made their impact on the field, while the gameplay was as slick and responsive as ever.

A great event opened for an even greater game, as FIFA 10 is sure to be on every gamer’s wish list this season, and we’re really impressed with what we’ve seen so far. Check back this week for the full review.

FIFA 10 is currently available on Xbox 360, PS3, PC, PSP, PS2, Wii and DS now.

Prepare your revolver, sharpen your sword, and steady yourself for Red Steel 2

Red Steel proved to be an awesome title on Wii by demonstrating that it was not just for the young ones. With a sequel in the works, due in 2010, we managed to get our hands on this highly anticipated title.

Red Steel 2 offers the player a one of a kind FPS experience with its mixture of gun battles and sword fights. It now makes use of the Wii motion plus to ensure precise movements and actions. This works really well and not only does it react spot-on to the players motions, but it also manages to detect the power of the players strikes. The result? Cutting edge and exciting gameplay that will leave you a little bit sweaty when you’re done.

The visuals are unique and well put together. They carry a stylized water paint, drawing like appearance which blends in well with the atmosphere of the game.

So far, Red Steel 2 looks awesome. It’s got all the ingredients needed to please Wii owners, as well as FPS and action enthusiasts. We can’t wait to get hold of this one next year.
